What is PgMP?
PgMP stands for ‘Program Management Professional’.
It is one of the PMI certifications, awarded to qualifying candidates who go through a two-stage evaluation process.
- PgMp certification is internationally recognised, popular, and highly credible professional certification in Program Management.
- PgMP certification is acknowledgement of qualifications of persons who lead and coordinate multiple projects of a program.

Who are PgMP? and what they do?
PgMP designation holders plan, govern, execute and oversee multiple projects running under a program.
They manage Budgets, Risks, Issues, Resources, and performance across the projects.
Their major responsibility is to make sure that Projects deliverables are strategically aligned with the program’s outcome.
Overall, they provide organizations a strategic leadership and act as Program Management Expert.
Steps to get PgMP?
The first step to get PgMP is that you meet the eligibility criteria and apply to PMI for the certification. In the Second step, candidates go through a 2 stage evaluation process.
Stage I Evaluation is a ‘Panel Review’. In it, a panel of certified expert program managers does an extensive review of candidates’ program management experience summaries provided in the application.
Candidates cleared in stage 1 ‘Panel Review’ are illegible for Stage II Review which is a Multiple Choice Questions Exam.
The third step after passing the exam is to celebrate and maintain a certificate.
PgMP Certification Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria is based on 3 elements namely;
Project and Program Experience Requirements are dependent on the candidate’s education level.
Secondary School Diploma, or Associate Degree: Project Management and Program Management experience requirements are 48 months and 84 months respectively.
Bachelor’s degree (4-Years): Project Management and Program Management experience requirements are 48 months.
Post Graduate degree or Masters degree: Experience requirement in both Project and Program areas is 36 months.
In all the cases, Experience must be non-overlapping and must be earned in the last 15 consecutive years.
If the candidate determines to meet the eligibility criteria of Experience, the next step is to start an application.

The normal application review period is 10 days, however, if the application is selected on a random basis for audit it may take longer. During the audit, candidates may be asked to verify the information provided in the application.
The chances of the application being picked for audit for PgMP certification are considered high.
Once the application review is complete, pay the fee. Upon approval of the application, candidates go through Stage I Evaluation which is a Panel Review. If Panel Review is successful candidate gets an Eligibility ID, which is the ‘KEY’ to move to Stage II Evaluation – Exam.
PgMP Certification Fee
PgMP fee varies based on candidate PMI membership status.
For PMI members exam fee is US$ 800, while for non-members it is US$ 1000.

PgPM Examination Content Outline
PgMP Certification Exam follows the examination content outline.
Percentage of Exam Questions is broken up among five domain areas as;
- Strategic Program Management 15%
- Benefits Management 11%
- Stakeholder Management 16%
- Governance 14%
- Program Life Cycle 44%, and which is further sub divided into;
- Initiating 6%,
- Planning 11%,
- Executing 14%
- Controlling 10% and
- Closing 3%
PgMP Certification Exam Process
Center-Based Testing or ‘CBT’ is the standard exam method. In it …, candidates sit in the exam at a local Pearson VUE Testing Center.
From the date of issue of eligibility ID, the candidate has one year period to schedule an exam and has three chances to appear.
To Schedule, an Exam; go to the PMI website and it directs to the Pearson VUE website.
The exam performance report is immediately available after the closing of the exam.
Candidates receive a printed copy of preliminary test results, along with an overall pass/fail status.
Once the Examination is Passed, you refer to yourself as a “Program Management Professional”.
PgMP Certification Maintenance
After passing the exam, next follow the maintenance phase.
PgMP credential holders must earn 60 PDUs over a three-year period.
Pay renewal fee and get a Renewal Certificate for the next three years cycle.
PDU stands for Professional Development Unit, and one hour of learning accounts for one PDU.
