Understanding Resume
Meaning, What it is about? Purpose?
Word Resume has its origin in the French and the Latin languages. It means summing up or summary. In the United States of America and Canada, Resume is the term used for C.V. It is a brief written personal account of education qualification and experience. A resume is prepared by a Job Seeker for presentation to potential employers.
What Résumé is?
Your resume tells the story of who you are as a professional. What your career has been like so far. It summarizes what you’ve learned, what skills you’ve acquired, and what experience you’ve gained.
A resume is primarily a printed or electronic document describing your career history. It is an outlook of your career progress.
When applying for a job, your resume is considered a primary marketing tool. In your absence, it showcases who you are. This is a picture of you in words that displays you to the employer. If it’s written well, or in other words, if painted well, it will become more attractive, sellable and acceptable to the employer.
Basically, it’s a knock at the door to get a chance to tell about yourself, a first step into the job market. It is information to potential employers that you are open to the job market, to be interviewed and considered for a job position.
What Résumé is Not?
It is not an Autobiography. Like You’re telling a whole long story about yourself that covers all aspects of your life. No, it is not like that. Your professional life is the only area that is covered in a resume.
A resume is written with a definite purpose in mind and has to be very specific. Your resume is a tool to get you an interview.
It is also not an application, you are not required to exhibit subordination. Right! It is an opportunity to define yourself with confidence and having a belief in yourself, your education experience and skills.
The resume isn’t also a template document that works for all jobs all the time and it is created only once. To resume; effective and attractive, its content must be updated as you progress in your career.
