What is PMI-RMP?

PMI-RMP stands for “Project Management Institute – Risk Management Professional.” It is one of the PMI certifications awarded to qualifying candidates who meet specific requirements and pass an examination.

PMI-RMP is an internationally recognized and popular certification in Risk Management. PMI-RMP certification applies to projects of various disciplines, sectors, and industries and is transferable across geographic boundaries. PMI-RMP is an affirmation of Individual specialized knowledge in Risk Management.

PMI-RMP designation holders growth

The graph below shows the growth of  PMI-RMP designation holders over the last ten years. PMI-RMP credential holders’ numbers indicate an average annual growth of  15% over the previous seven years. 

The growth in numbers displays professionals’ and employers’ popularity, interest, and confidence in this PMI-RMP certification.

Who are PMI-RMP?  and What they do?

PMI-RMP designation holders possess basic and practical application of Project Management Knowledge Areas. In addition to that, they also demonstrate unique expertise and competency in a specialized area of project risk management. They are skilled in; Identity, Assessing,  Analyze Risks, and planning Risk Response accordingly. They; Monitor, Track, and Control Project Risks. Overall, they Contribute to project success as a subject matter expert in Risk Management.

PMI-RMP Eligibility Criteria

1. Education, 2. Risk Management Experience 3. Risk Management Training. 

PMI-RMP experience requirement is dependent on the candidate’s education. Secondary School Diploma, or Associate Degree holder candidates, must show 36 months of Project Risk Management Experience before applying for certification.

For four years Bachelor’s degree holders, the risk management experience requirement is  24 months, and for Post Graduate degrees or Master’s degree holders, it is 12 months.

Over the last five years, the experience must demonstrate non-overlapping project risk management work.

Formal training in Project Risk Management requirement is 40 contact hours for Secondary School Diploma or Associate Degree Holders, while for undergraduate and postgraduate degree holders, it is 30 contact hours.

One hour of classroom Instructions equals one contact hour. 

PMI-RMP Exam Fee

PMI-RMP Exam Fee varies based on candidate PMI membership status.

For PMI Members fee is US$ 520, while for non-members, it is US$ 670.

PMI-RMP Exam

PMI-RMP Exam is available as Computer-Based Testing or CBT. In it, the candidate sits in the exam at a local Pearson VUE Testing Center. Online Proctor Testing or OPT is not available yet for PMI-RMP Exam. 

PMI-RMP® Exam is available in the English language only. Exam Time is 210 Minutes or three and half hours. The exam consists of 170 questions, and out of these, only 150 questions are graded. The format of questions asked in the exam is multiple choice.

PMI-RMP Exam Content Outline

PMI-RMP Exam is based on the Exam content outline issued by PMI.

Percentage of Exam Questions breakup  among Five Domain areas is as under;

• Risk Strategy and Planning 19-20%  which translate into number of questions 32-34, based on 170 questions,
• Stakeholder Engagement 19-20%  or 32-34 questions,
• Risk Process facilitation 25-28% which means 42-47 questions,
• Risk Monitoring and Reporting 19-20%  or approximately 32-34 questions,
• Perform Specialized Risk Analysis 14-16%  means 24-27 questions.

PMI-RMP Manintenance and Renewal

Once you pass the exam, next follows the maintenance phase. PMI-RMP credential holders must earn 30 PDUs, in the three years. Pay renewal fee and get a Renewal Certificate for the next three years cycle. PDU stands for Professional Development Unit. One hour of learning accounts for one PDU.
